Family Therapy Training Series – YES CCC

In collaboration with a long time partner, YES Community Counseling Center located in Long Island, NY, we set out to develop a series of four family-based training sessions for the clinical workforce treating adolescents and young adults experiencing mental health and substance use challenges.

We developed The Family Therapy Training Series, which included 4 family-based training sessions, delivered live on Zoom, monthly from February through May 2024. Session topics included: Foundations of Family Therapy for Substance Use Problems, Skills for Parent Engagement in Family Therapy, Family Therapy Techniques for Adolescents with ADHD, and Principles of Couples Therapy for Substance Use Problems.

Participants reported a greater understanding of the fundamentals of the systemic relational approach for substance use disorders and possessing new family-based skills and tools that they can add to their toolbox. These resources or techniques can be called upon in the context of a clinician’s existing practice as complementary rather than an overhaul of the way any individual provider works.
