CBTFrame Extended Online Course is a 4.5 credit (ASWB/ACE and NBCC) online self-paced training built around the core elements of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for adolescent substance use and other externalizing challenges. CBTFrame uses video-based modeling with each module including brief didactic information on a selection of the CBT techniques and a 5-8 minute video vignette featuring therapists re-enacting real life sessions with youth clients and their families. The vignette is followed by a short coding activity focusing on the recognition and rating of extensiveness of CBT techniques plus immediate feedback providing evidence for which techniques were displayed. The extended course includes 45 modules and 42 exercises.

Course Overview

CBTFrame is an online self-paced training built around the core elements of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for adolescent substance use and other externalizing challenges. Learning Objectives

After attending participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the conceptual bases behind the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBTFrame) techniques.
  2. Recognize and differentiate between the CBTFrame techniques.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to observationally code the CBTFrame techniques on a five-point scale as they occur in mock video sessions.
  4. Give examples of how a functional analysis of behavior can be applied to your work as a treatment provider.
  5. Express the clinical benefits of breaking down the three-part model (thinking, feeling doing) within treatment.
  6. List specific treatment techniques for equipping adolescents with skills to better understand and cope with difficult cognitions and emotions.
  7. Define specific techniques for dissecting a problem behavior and coming up with potential solutions to discuss and/or try.
  8. Recognize the advantages of activity sampling, i.e. helping clients identify new, positive activities.
  9. Apply clinical techniques related to communication and assertiveness skills building.
  10. Demonstrate the ability to practice new skills within sessions.
  11. Describe the benefits of involving caregivers in an adolescent’s treatment through updates or invitation to participate in sessions.

CBTFrame Introduction

This self-paced webinar portion of this course provides an introduction to each of the CBTFrame techniques featured in exercises to follow.

CBTFrame Materials

Within the materials tab, you can find a PDF version of the CBTFrame handbook which provides a more in-depth description of each of the CBTFrame techniques. You may refer to this at any time as you navigate through the course.

CBTFrame Exercises

42 exercises total
10-15 minutes per exercise)

Each exercise is structured as follows:

  • Brief didactic information on a selection of 3 CBTFrame techniques.
  • A 5-8 minute video vignette showing a mock therapy session featuring real therapists and actors playing clients.
  • A short coding activity asking participants to recognize techniques and rate extensiveness, followed by immediate feedback including exact therapist statements from the video as evidence.

Molly Bobek is a licensed clinical social worker at Partnership to End Addiction. She supports the clinical components of the Family and Adolescent Clinical Technology & Science (FACTS) team’s research projects aiming to support the adoption and sustainability of evidence-based approaches for adolescent substance use.

Molly’s research interests include novel approaches to training and consultation to better equip and support the community-based workforce treating adolescents and their families and promoting relational interventions across the lifespan.

Molly is also on the faculty at the Ackerman Institute for the Family and maintains a private practice providing therapy to families, couples, and individuals.

Completion & Continuing Education (CE) Information

Partnership to End Addiction, [provider number], is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: [dates]. Continuing Education Information

  • Participants must complete the entire course to receive CE credits.
  • Post-test to be completed immediately after course completion within the Learning Management System.
  • Participants must earn a score of 65% or higher in order to receive CE credits. If participants score below 65%, they will have the opportunity to retest up to 2 times.
  • The course evaluation must be completed for participants to be eligible to receive CE credit.
  • Eligible participants will receive CE credit certificates via email within 14 business days. Certificates of completion are distributed by email only.
